Most towns fail their septic systems one at a time, spread out across whatever decades the houses went up in. Tilton isn’t shaped that way. Fifty winters of frost heave move those boxes, and a d-box off level by half an inch sends everything down one trench while the rest of the field sits idle and unused. Re-leveling it is cheap. Discovering it after the loaded trench is spent costs you the field.

What’s Worth Fixing on a Fifty-Year-Old System, and What Isn’t

The honest dividing line runs through the leach field. Everything upstream of it — the run out of the house, the tank lid, the baffles, the filter, the d-box, the pump and float if you have one — is generally a repair. Usually a day. Usually hundreds rather than thousands. The field is the expensive half, and the field is the half that cannot be patched back into being twenty years old.

Repairs we do in this town constantly: replace a collapsed inlet or outlet baffle. Reset and re-level a distribution box so the trenches share the load again, which on a field that’s only partly worn can honestly buy years. Add an effluent filter to a tank that never had one. Replace a cracked or root-jammed line between the house and the tank. Swap a dead pump or a stuck float. Set risers so the covers come up to grade and nobody digs again.

Replacements we don’t argue about, and won’t pretend otherwise on: a steel tank. A concrete tank with a failed seam or a wall spalling through. A cesspool or a dry well, because there is no version of repairing one. And a leach field that’s been receiving solids for years — once the soil interface under the trenches has sealed off, nothing anybody does to the tank reopens it.

When it does come to a new field, Tilton’s constraint is space, the same as it is everywhere else in this town. A full design goes to NHDES for approval and gets built by a permitted installer, and on a parcel this size the designer’s entire job is finding a legal footprint. Sometimes that means a different kind of system than the one you had, which costs more and takes longer. Worried, no. Prepared, yes. Once the cover is off it’s obvious inside four seconds. And there’s no repair path: steel rusts from the top down, the lid goes first, and a rusted steel lid is something a person or an animal can fall through. If you have one, replacing it isn’t an upsell, it’s the job.

Can a leach field be brought back, or is it always a replacement?

Depends entirely on why it stopped. A field that’s been taking solids for years — no. The soil interface is sealed and nothing reopens it. A field that’s merely tired, or one where an unlevel d-box has been beating a single trench to death while the others idled, or one going under in the spring for reasons that have nothing to do with the field itself — there’s real work to do in all three, and it can add years.
