The town’s master plan puts it plainly: Bridgewater is split nearly in half by the ridge of Bridgewater Mountain, with six watersheds running east to the Pemigewasset and six running west to Newfound. Most people think of that as a matter of which way the brooks go. For us it’s a matter of what’s under the leach field.

On River Road and the flats along Route 3, the ground is stratified sand and gravel — the same deposit the town identifies as its major aquifer. That soil drains beautifully, which is why the old systems down there were built small and shallow and worked for forty years. It also, in the plan’s own words, transmits water rapidly and is “quite susceptible to pollution from septic tank effluent.” A field that’s stopped treating effluent on the river side doesn’t pond up in the yard where you’d notice. It keeps draining. Straight down, into the gravel your well is drawing from and your neighbor’s well is drawing from. The system looks fine right up until somebody’s water test doesn’t.

Flip over the ridge to the lake side and it’s the reverse problem. The hillside above 3A and behind the point runs to ledge and steep grades, some of it past 25 percent slope. Fields up there were squeezed into whatever pocket of soil the installer could find, and a lot of them have a foot or two of usable ground over rock. When one of those saturates, the effluent has nowhere to go but out — you get the wet patch, the smell, the springtime seep at the bottom of the lawn that’s headed for the lake. It shows itself. That’s the one silver lining.

So the first thing we do on a Bridgewater repair call is figure out which town you’re in. The second is figuring out whether the field is actually the problem, because most of the time it isn’t.

If you’re on the river side and your well is close to your field, get the water tested every spring. Coliform showing up in a well that used to be clean is often the first — and only — warning that a gravel-lot leach field has stopped doing its job.

What Usually Needs Fixing, and What Doesn’t

A backed-up house is not a diagnosis. Nine times out of ten it’s something between the house and the field, and those parts are cheap. Outlet baffle rotted off the tank so solids have been running into the field. Distribution box heaved by frost and tipped, so one trench is drowning and the rest are dry. A section of line crushed by the truck that delivered the hot tub. Roots. We open the tank, look, and probe before anybody talks about a new field.

On the river side, when the field really is done, replacement is usually straightforward. Good soil, flat lot, plenty of separation to water if the lot has the depth. The design question is about protecting the aquifer — separation to seasonal high water, setback from wells — more than about finding a place to put it. Where the lot sits in the flood zone the town has flagged on River Road, roughly Hammond Hill south to Able Road, that changes the design and we’ll say so early.

On the lake side, a replacement means somebody has to find soil. That’s a designer with a backhoe and test pits, sometimes a raised or mound system because there isn’t enough native ground over the ledge to treat effluent the old way. It costs more. We’ll walk the lot with you before you spend a dollar on design so you know whether you’re looking at a straightforward job or a hard one.

And a plain word about the shore lots on the point: a cottage that was a three-season camp with a cesspool and got a bathroom in 1975 may not have a real leach field at all. We find those. There’s no repairing what isn’t there, and we’ll tell you that on the first visit instead of the third.

Baffles, line sections, and D-box work run a few hundred to a couple thousand depending on depth and access. A full field replacement in Bridgewater runs $15,000–$40,000, with the lake-side ledge lots at the top of that range and the flat river-side lots at the bottom. My yard on River Road is bone dry and nothing smells. How can the field be failing?

That’s exactly how a field fails in fast-draining gravel. It doesn’t back up or pond; it just stops treating and keeps draining. The first sign is often a well test, yours or a neighbor’s. If the system is forty years old and has never been evaluated, it’s worth opening the tank and looking at what’s been going into the field.

We’re on the hill above 3A. Why did the designer say mound system?

Not enough native soil over the ledge. A conventional field needs a few feet of good ground to treat effluent before it hits rock or water, and a lot of the lake-side hillside doesn’t have it. A mound brings the soil in. It’s more expensive and it’s a bump in the lawn, but it’s what treats the effluent before it heads downhill to the lake.

Is it worth repairing the old system or should I just replace it?

Depends what’s broken. A rotted baffle on a tank with a healthy field is a repair, full stop. A tank that’s been dumping solids into the field for ten years is a different story, and we’ll probe the field before answering. We’d rather do the $600 fix and be wrong about nothing than sell you a field you didn’t need.

The designer draws it and files with NHDES; we coordinate with them and do the installation. On the shore lots there’s the shoreland permit layer on top of that. It’s paperwork we do all the time, and we’ll keep it moving so the job doesn’t sit.
