Tamworth is five villages and sixty square miles of Carroll County, sitting under Mount Chocorua where the Lakes Region runs out and the White Mountains start. About 2,800 people live here year-round. There is no town sewer — the only shared system in Tamworth is a small community septic tank on Main Street in Tamworth Village — and there is no zoning either, which matters more than people think.
Tamworth Village, Chocorua, Whittier, South Tamworth and Wonalancet each have their own history and their own idea of what the town is. Route 16 runs the east side through Chocorua on its way to Conway; Route 25 follows the Bearcamp River along the south; 113 and 113A wander between them past Hemenway State Forest and up to the end of the road at Wonalancet. Chocorua Lake is 220 acres, motor-free by state law since the early 1970s, and the 6,000-acre basin around it is a National Register historic district — the largest in New England — full of summer houses that go back to the 1880s. The town has no zoning ordinance and has never adopted a building code, so nobody at the town office ever signed off on where your house went or how big the tank under it is. Most of the built-up part of town sits on the largest stratified drift aquifer in New Hampshire, which is why the ground drains so well and why the well next door is the thing a bad leach field ends up in. About a third of the housing is seasonal and only half the lots in town are owned by somebody with a Tamworth mailing address.
Chocorua Lake, White Lake, Great Hill Pond and Moores Pond all trigger the RSA 485-A:39 septic site assessment when a developed waterfront lot sells. On the old Chocorua basin places, ask early which building the tank actually serves — a lot of those houses were two or three buildings dragged together a century ago.
