Holderness sits in Grafton County between the White Mountain foothills and the Squam Lakes, where US Route 3 and Route 25 run through the village and cross the channel that joins Big Squam to Little Squam. Squam Lake covers roughly 6,800 acres across four towns, and Holderness holds a long run of its shoreline along with all of Little Squam and White Oak Pond. There is no municipal sewer anywhere in town — the village, the school, the summer camps and every road out to the water run on private septic.
About two thousand people live in Holderness year-round, and that number tells you almost nothing about how hard the town’s septic systems work. Squam has been a summer place since the 1890s, when Deephaven and then Rockywold opened as family camps on the lake, and the pattern set then still holds — houses that sit closed most of the year and then run at full capacity from late June into September. Holderness School adds a second calendar on top of that one, filling and emptying on the academic year instead of the lake season. Away from the water the town is rural and wooded: East Holderness, the Route 113 corridor toward Sandwich, long gravel drives and older systems that go a while between service calls. Most of our work here is seasonal openings and closings, shoreland site assessments when waterfront changes hands, and repairs on tight lakefront lots where there isn’t much room to work with.

A septic site assessment is required at sale inside the protected shoreland under RSA 485-A:39, so get it on the calendar the week you list rather than the week you close. NHDES still recommends pumping every 2–3 years regardless of how the place is used.
