New Durham is the northernmost town in Strafford County, sitting right where Route 11 climbs out of Farmington and becomes the gateway into the Lakes Region. Its centerpiece is Merrymeeting Lake — 1,233 acres of deep, spring-fed water ringed by North Shore Road and South Shore Road — whose outlet, the Merrymeeting River, runs on toward Alton Bay and Lake Winnipesaukee. There is no municipal sewer in New Durham; the village at New Durham Corner and every rural road and lakefront lot beyond it run on private septic.
New Durham is an all-septic town, and the lake sets the pace of the work. Merrymeeting went through a full turnover starting in the 1990s, when a shoreline of simple summer camps was steadily rebuilt into higher-end summer homes, and there is very little undeveloped shore left. That leaves a mix we see constantly: newer waterfront houses on modern systems next door to older camps still running tanks and leach fields sized for a few warm-weather weekends. Because both shore roads are paved and plowed, a good share of those camps have quietly gone year-round or heavy-rental without the system underneath ever being resized. Away from the lake the town stays rural and wooded — long driveways, older systems, and homes that go years between service calls. Most of what we get called for here is routine pumping on rural year-round homes, spring openings around Merrymeeting, and inspections when a converted camp changes hands.
Selling a place on Merrymeeting Lake? A septic site assessment is required at sale for developed waterfront inside the protected shoreland (RSA 485-A:39), so schedule it the week you list. On a camp that has been winterized, that assessment is also the cheapest way to learn whether the tank and field were ever sized for the way the house is actually used now — and NHDES still recommends pumping every 2–3 years regardless.
