Emergency calls in Laconia bunch up in two places, and they’re about as different as two problems get.
The first is June. Motorcycle Week brings north of 300,000 people to the Weirs across nine days — 2026 ran the 13th to the 21st — and every rentable room within a couple miles of Lakeside Avenue is full. A cottage that sleeps four all summer is suddenly sleeping ten, and it’s doing it on a tank that went in back when the place was a seasonal camp. The calls come midweek, usually. Somebody’s renting the place out and the toilets have stopped going down.
The second is February. Frozen lines, mostly at places that sat empty through a cold stretch — a camp shut down for the winter, a rental between tenants. No warm water moving through the pipe and a shallow run freezes solid.
In between those we get the ordinary ones. A tank that went too long, a failed pump on a mound system, roots. Same as anywhere.
Renting your place out for Motorcycle Week? Get it pumped in May, not July. A tank sitting three-quarters full going into that week is not going to make it out the other side.
Stop using water. All of it. Every gallon you send down — a shower, a load of laundry, one more flush — is another gallon that has to go somewhere, and right now it’s got nowhere to go but back at you. Nothing else you do in the next hour matters as much as this one.
If it’s a rental, get the tenants doing the same. Have that conversation immediately, not after.
Don’t open the tank yourself. The gas in there will put a person down in seconds, and it happens every year to somebody who figured they’d just have a quick look.
If sewage is already in the house, keep people and pets out of the room. Then call. We’ll ask a few things — is it one fixture or all of them, is there anything showing at the tank, when was it last pumped — and that usually tells us what to put on the truck.
Emergency work gets priced on what it turns out to be. A tank that’s simply full is a pump-out, and pump-out money. A failed pump or a frozen line is a different job. Either way you get the number before we start.
Yes. We know what that week does to the rentals down by Lakeside and we plan around it. Call early in the day if you can — by afternoon the roads around the Weirs are a parking lot, and that’s the part we can’t do much about.
Probably not. One fixture usually means a clog in that fixture’s own line, not the septic. When it’s the system, everything low in the house goes at once — basement toilet, tub, floor drain. Tell us which one you’ve got and we’ll say honestly whether it can wait.
Sometimes it fixes it and sometimes it buys you a week. If the tank was just full, you’re fine. If the leach field has quit taking water, the tank fills straight back up and you’ll be calling again shortly. We can usually tell which one you’re dealing with while we’re there.
